Never This Product is Junk!!!!

Evidently NOT Water Resistent and This Is Not a Product You Should Waste Your Money On! The patch was on a deck, waited for several days of absolutely dry weather, prepared the wood, applied, the patched allowed to dried overnight approximately 24 hours. The patch was dry and sanded smooth. I applied two coats of Olympic Maximum Stain which has a 10-year guarantee. After approximately 30 Days the patches swelled up and forced the stain off the surface and the patch turned to a sawdust consistency! I have patched this very deck with other plastic wood materials that lasted for years but DAP Plastic Wood All Purpose Wood Filler IS A TOTAL FRAUD!

Thank you for posting your review. We're sorry to hear about your experience with DAP Plastic Wood-X Latex Wood Filler. Plastic Wood-X is not designed or recommended for use as a "stand alone" product, as indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "Exterior applications must be coated with latex or oil-based paint or solid color stain". The only way that the product would behave as described, is if there was moisture exposure. This means that water is entering the patch through the applied coating or bypassing it (from the edges or from underneath). Should you have any additional questions or wish to discuss this further, please free to contact DAP's Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.

NOT waterproof!
We have an exterior balcony with pressure treated wood that was painted last year with Behr Porch paint. It is an open balcony. Last month, we noticed that a portion of one wood plank had rotted through. Home Depot recommended DAP Plastic Wood Filler to fill the rotten part (about 8 inches by 6 inches). After allowing DAP Filler to dry for 3-4 days in the sun, it was very hard so we repainted. It rained 2 days later. Now that portion where DAP Filler had been used is SOFT like putty or softer. Even after another week of sun, it is a mess. How can we fix this? Home Depot says that the product should be weather-proof (but it is not).

DAP Technical Customer Service
Thank you for posting your feedback/question on DAP Plastic Wood-X Latex Wood Filler. Plastic Wood-X is not designed or marketed as a "waterproof" product. As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "Exterior applications must be coated with latex or oil-based paint or solid color stain”. The only way that the product would behave as described is if there was moisture exposure. This means that water is entering the patch through the paint or bypassing it (from the edges or from underneath). Based on the photograph that you submitted, moisture is likely entering to board at the unsealed end, and also through the cracks in the face grain. DAP Plastic Wood (All Versions) is designed for minor cosmetic repairs, such as: nail/screw holes, cracks, knot holes, etc. Large format repairs such as rot repair (depicted in your photograph) are outside the scope of this product’s intended uses. For this type of repair, the use of two-component repair filler (such as an epoxy) would typically be required. Should you have any additional questions or require further assistance, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.

I used this to fill a hole/gap on my wood floor. It had worked extremely well. I was definitely surprised. I was extremely pleased the way it turned out. It was very easy to do. Just follow the directions. This had worked way better compared to others I have used in past. Others I've tried have dried way to fast almost immediately. This one dries fast but not as fast as others. With this one I was able to finish before it dried. This one also doesn't smell as bad as others I've used. I would definitely buy this product to use for future projects around my home

When my husband was installing our trim for the floors, we were left with lots of nail holes and gaps. The DAP plastic wood filler was so easy to use. I liked most that you know when it is set and ready for finishing when the color changes. I was able to fill in some of the cracks and holes with little work. Once dried I sanded it down and was able to stain the DAP to match the other wood trim. It isnt instant drying so you do have to be patient for it to fully dry before sanding and staining, but the beauty is you will know when it is dry by the color change. Just don't forget to seal the lid tightly otherwise the rest it in the tub will dry out before you can use it all. It is a fabulous product for all us us DIYers that are trying to save money doing projects ourseld.

Product is leaving stains around the filled holes
4 years ago
We have been using this product to fill brad/screw holes in ply wood. It dries nicely and sands nicely, however it seems to be leaving pink or dark stains in the wood grain around the patch. We've sanded through the top layer of plywood trying to get rid of the stain. We would like to stain these boards with light colored stains or clear varnish, but the dark spot remains.

Technical Department
Thank you for posting your feedback. We are sorry to see your low star review on DAP Plastic Wood X All Purpose Wood Filler. As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "2. Match wood filler color to finished wood. Test wood filler, stain and finish combination on a small area first to ensure desired stain color. 3. If wood is to be stained, stain before filling with wood filler. Then use stain to develop desired final finish. Please follow stain manufacturer’s instructions for application." Based on your commentary, it would appear the referenced application guidance was not followed. At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you about your project/application and to offer some additional finishing guidance.

Will NOT hold stain
I refinished a vintage table, sanded, prepped, did everything I should have done then used min wax wood finish in special walnut and the cracks and holes that I patched will NOT hold stain...I've worked hard on this table and the stain is beautiful on the REAL wood but the DAP plastic wood looks HORRIBLE... now I'm going to have to figure out something else, I guess my table is ruined and I'm against painting it...I'm going to have to buy another product and start all over or just trash it...Thanks for such a misleading description DAP..!!!

AMAZING Product for crown molding
AMAZING PRODUCT! Installed crown molding and used this product to fill the nail holes and where the MDF molding joined up. The only exception is that I used caulk for the corners since it will expand and contract to some degree. This stuff is super easy to apply using only my finger and wet wipes to smooth it down. Next, I used a very gentle sanding and touched up the paint. The crown molding turned out flawless and not a single joint is visible!! Could not possibly be happier with this product!!

My husband is an experienced cabinetmaker and used this while building some built-in bookshelves for our our living room. The Plastic Wood-X worked very well and was on par with the other fillers he uses- and he is very picky. Pros: Good consistency for spreading Doesn't dry/thicken too quickly so that it becomes difficult to spread with the putty knife Small holes such as nail holes can be filled with one application without shrinking and creating dimples Sands well Cons: None The Drydex feature that changes the filler from purple to natural when it dries will probably be useful for beginning woodworkers but experienced ones will not be concerned with this.
