Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to see your low star review on DAP Painter's Putty '53'. Based on your description of the product's thick/stiff texture, it would appear that you may have purchased material that is beyond shelf life. As product ages, it will thicken to the point of becoming difficult or impractical to use. At your convenience, please contact DAP's Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you and so that we can reach out to the store location where you purchased this product. When call in please be sure to have the package available, as we will need the production code printed on the package in order to determine the date of manufacture.

Works good for nail holes
The print is so small, it’s difficult to read, so I didn’t realize this stuff doesn't harden until I had done the work. I did a large section around the top edge of my shower stall, which I’m going to need to dig out the layer of plumbers putty. I need patch repair compound that hardens for this job. I’m only taking 1 star off since it does work good on nail and screw holes as the label recommends. I just figured if it works for nail holes, it should work for patch work too. My bad, as I should have done some research before using it.

Hardens if not used, can't revive it.
I had no problem using it fresh, but when it aged for a year in the properly sealed original container, it hardened and cannot be worked easily. I wish the manufacturer would recommend a solvent to soften the putty. Is paint thinner a good solvent?

Thank you for posting your review. We're sorry to hear about your frustration with Painter's Putty '53'. When used as a filler, Painter's Putty '53' requires 24 to 48 hours to "skin" (surface dry) for paint application. The product can take several more days to dry firm (not hard). Most "oil-based" putties and fillers, including DAP Painter's Putty '53' do not set with enough hardness to allow for proper sanding. As indicated on the product label and supporting documentation: "Product should be tooled and finished while wet, as product will not sand well." For wood repairs where sanding and fine finishing are required, we would recommend the use of products like Plastic Wood-X Wood Filler. For wallboard/plaster repairs, we would recommend the use of products like ALEX PLUS Spackling. Should you require additional assistance, please feel free to reach out to DAP's Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to see your low star review on the DAP Painter's Putty '53'. We are not clear as to the intent of your post, as this product is not marketed or labeled for use as a "spackle". As indicated as the product package label and supporting product literature: "Ideal for filling nail holes, dents, and cracks in wood surfaces.", "Ideal for filling nail holes and cracks in baseboards, windowsills, wood siding and woodwork.", DAP Painter's Putty '53' is an oil-based formula, “When used as a filler, Painter's Putty '53' requires 24 to 48 hours to "skin" (surface dry) for paint application. The product can take several more days to dry firm (not hard). “For best results, prime Painter’s Putty ‘53' with an oil-based primer before painting with latex paints." This guidance is common amount all oil-based wood fillers, putties and glazing compounds, this is not unique this type of product/formula. Should you have any additional questions or wish to discuss your project, please feel free to contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.
